Helen and Maurey McGowan in their store "McGowan's Grocery" on Penn Avenue and 67th Street in Richfield in the spring of 1934.
The store went bankrupt soon after. Maurey would say later on about the causes of the bankruptcy, it was the Great Depression and "they gave away too many free mittens."
Helen at the time was pregnant with their first of three children, Mary Ellyn. [1]
