This tall, narrow Italianate commercial building was designed by prominent St. Paul architect A.M. Radcliff.
The first owner, John A. Strehlein, operated a saloon on the first floor and lived in the apartments upstairs. In 1980 Sam's Discount Mart occupied the building.
This building and the connected buildings are now part of the Cathedral Hill YWCA which fronts on Selby Avenue.
Memories and stories
The Aberdeen Hotel was at the far end of the block near Virginia Street. In 1937 a young woman was murdered there and the hotel was boarded up. Under pressure from the neighborhood, the hotel was demolished in 1944.
