Mrs. J.W. Bass lived here with her family until 1903 when the Bass family exchanged houses with Chauncey Milton Griggs who added the Ionic portico. Griggs was of the proprietors of the Griggs, Cooper and Co., a wholesale grocery firm which was established in 1882.
The house was design by James Knox Taylor, Cass Gilbert's partner until their partnership was dissolved in 1892 and Taylor moved to Philadelphia. This was one of the last St. Paul houses designed by Taylor who went on to become the Supervising Architect to the United States Treasury, a position which gave him responsibility for all government buildings constructed during his tenure.
