Located above Swede Hollow, adjacent to site of Theodore Hamm's mansion the Allenson house boasts a wonderfully complete Eastlake patternbook design. The ornamental trim of houses such as this one was a triumph of wood-working machinery; the gouge decorated the vergeboards and casings, the lathe turned the porch piers and spindles, and the fret-saw produced the ornate brackets.

"The original owner and resident of this house was John Allenson, a foreman at the St. Paul Foundry Company (Como Avenue near Western). The house was built for an estimated $2,490. A large Victorian home which retains ornate carving in bargeboards and window frames and intact porch cornice."

“This letter was found in the wall of the historic Allenson House at 635 Bates Avenue:

October 20, 1897 St. Paul Dispatch St. Paul, Minn

Editor: please insert the following in this evening’s paper: A serious smash-up occurred at the corner of sixth and St. Peter Streets. A teamster by the name of Mr. Brown was coming down Sixth St. at a lively rate, when a bicyclist by the name of Roy Brattow came screeching down St. Peter Street, and ran into the wagon. The horse became frightened, and ran down Sixth St. as far as the Mannihiemers, when it was caught by some newsboys. Considerable damage was done to the wagon and bicycle, but none seriously hurt.
