Legendary actress Judy Garland lived in Grand Rapids for four and a half years. The frame farmhouse was first moved from its original site in the summer of 1938. In 1994 it was donated to the Judy Garland Museum, and the house was moved to its current location.

History

Frances Ethel Gumm was born on June 10, 1922, at Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids. She spent the first 4 1/2 years of her life in Grand Rapids with her parents, Frank and Ethel Gumm, and her older sisters, Mary and Virginia. Her first public performance was at the Itasca Mercantile store when she was two years old. At age 2 1/2 she gave her first public stage performance in her father's theater, the New Grand Theater, in Grand Rapids. As Baby Gumm, she travelled around the region performing. In 1926 the Gumm family moved to California. The 1930 U.S. Census shows them living in Lancaster town, an unincorporated place in Antelope Township, Los Angeles County.
