This impressive limestone building with Mansard roof was built for Stanford Newel, a Saint Paul attorney. According to the Ramsey County Historical Survey, "With the exception of the Cathedral, this house is the largest and most imposing stone building in a large area."

The building's original owner, Stanford Newell was also a member of Saint Paul's first park board. Newell Park in the Midway neighborhood is named after him.
