John Welsch Sr. was a German immigrant from Kirkel, Rhineland Pfalz (now Saarland). John opened Welsch's Saloon in 1905 at the corner of Rice and Maryland. At one point he also owned all of the lots on either side of Rice Street between Maryland and Rose. When his children married each was given a lot with a house - right next door to his own.

Welsch's Saloon was turned into a hardware store after the Volstead act. It was re-opened in 1934 under the management of John Jr.'s older son, Wallace Welsch, and was later managed by younger son Florian.
