This house was built in 1893 for an estimated cost of $26,000 making it one of the most lavish houses constructed on Summit Avenue in the early 1890's. The original owner and occupant of the house was William Lightner, a prominent St. Paul lawyer, and partner of George B. Young. Young and Lightner commissioned Cass Gilbert to build the double house directly west of this house in 1886. When the Lightner family outgrew their half of the house, they hired Gilbert to design this house for them.
